reporting services on vista

Luckily I still have my old XP PC which has SS Reporting Services installed because my new PC w/Vista Home Premium does not have the Windows Authentication feature needed to install SSRS.

Does anyone know if there is an upgrade for Vista Premium to Business? I'd much rather learn SSRS on my faster PC.

Hi,

Upgrade really refers to moving from one version to a newer version, i.e. XP to Vista. I've never seen an "upgrade" license to move between editions of the same product as you're seeking. About the best that I could suggest is that you can buy an Upgrade from XP to Vista Business, although I'm not sure how Vista validates your copy of XP, it might require that you have XP installed on the system where you're installing Vista.

You would really need to talk to the Windows folks for more specific information, you can start here to find the right place to contact.

I am running Vista home premium and installing SQL Express Advanced and do not get the reporting service install option during the installation. I got the warning messages during the installation that the IIS is not available but I have the IIS 7 working with all the features enabled. My ASP.NET apps work on the IIS and connect fine to SQL too, just can not seem to get the reporting services.

Please verify you have IIS configured per the article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/920201. Ignore the fact that this says Vista Beta2, it's the same for RTM. (I've requested the article be updated.)

I'm in the same situation-I did exactly as stated in the referenced link at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/920201, re-ran the sql server express w/ adv services exe and reporting services is not an option. I've removed all databases and sql express applications and started from scratch making certain IIs7 was set up properly( I can access the index.html from my IE browser) before I reinstalled, it was all in vain. Please help, I'm at my wits end. I've been working at this for three weekends. I've read and searched and uninstalled and reinstalled and updated, Please help. My environment- vista home premium, sql xprs w/adv serv, sql xprs toolkit, IIS7, three windows auto-updates, visual studio SP1, sql SP2 and sql w/adv serv.SP2.

I've installed and uninstalled so many times and *.exe that my install is most likely corrupt. I've browsed my registry settings and I see an entry for Report Service. This is making me crazy....Please advise how to proceed to get a clean install.

Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, included IIS7 in Home Premium so that the home developer/hobbyist would be able to continue with their developement of Windows and Web apps. It seems that the home developer/hobbyist does not need the ability to generate reports.

I am really hoping that this issue will be resolved in some future update to either SQL Express or Vista.

Unfortuntely, see the following post to this group - it appears that under Ultimate Vista you DO get the options for FTP and Windows Authentication (a full-blown IIS) and the poster was able to install SQL Express SP2 with Reporting Svcs.

If Microsoft made this information known, I apparently missed it as did many others. I do not remember seeing Vista Ultimate listed as a requirement in the SQL Express SP2 information - or even the BID stuff. Now it becomes a choice whether to pay the $180 additional dollars and write-off the hours spent figuring out this problem, or just scrap this and go back to LAMP development.

I'm an MCSD and have developed with MS technologies for a very long time. I'll readily admit that I can develop quality solutions much faster using Microsoft tools - but the additional costs combined with problems like this quickly negate any advantage in development time. The extra time it takes me to figure out open source software doesn't seem that bad after I spend a couple of hours to learn that MS didn't include the same IIS capabilities in Vista as XP and now I need to spend $180 more - Glassfish is looking pretty good right about now.

Reporting Services in SQL 2000

I would like to learn/more, practice creating and using reports but I don't know if I can do that on my home laptop with version 2000. I know, I know... upgrade to 2005. Can't do that due to technical difficulties on my other pc. Can I do this with my current setup?

Yes you can. For SQL 2000, Reporting Services came as an add on component rather that being part of main install package.

You will need to have Windows 2000 or XP Professional which comes with IIS. This is required for running Reporting Services.

Hi,

Do you have the SQL Server 2000 is installed on your computer? As I remember, Reporting Services needs at least a Standart Edition for SQL2K

If you have SQL Server, then you need the IIS also installed on your pc.

If you want to create reports, you need also the VS.Net 2003 installed on your pc.

I can all run them on my laptop which is an XP SP2. Your machine does not need to be a server :)

I only have 2000 Professional Edition. Looks like I'll have to wait for my other laptop to be repaired and then I'll try again.

I should get my xp professional laptop back this next week and I will have the Developer edition of SQL Server 2000 soon to be upgraded to 2005. You say I need IIS installed which I understand, but is VS.Net 2003 a free product or does this have to be paid for?
