I am running Vista home premium and installing SQL Express Advanced and do not get the reporting service install option during the installation. I got the warning messages during the installation that the IIS is not available but I have the IIS 7 working with all the features enabled. My ASP.NET apps work on the IIS and connect fine to SQL too, just can not seem to get the reporting services.
Please verify you have IIS configured per the article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/920201. Ignore the fact that this says Vista Beta2, it's the same for RTM. (I've requested the article be updated.)

|||I can not install FTP or Windows authentication as this being a vista home premium edition but I have ordered the ultimate edition, I will install that and will post back how it went. Thanks.|||
I'm in the same situation-I did exactly as stated in the referenced link at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/920201, re-ran the sql server express w/ adv services exe and reporting services is not an option. I've removed all databases and sql express applications and started from scratch making certain IIs7 was set up properly( I can access the index.html from my IE browser) before I reinstalled, it was all in vain. Please help, I'm at my wits end. I've been working at this for three weekends. I've read and searched and uninstalled and reinstalled and updated, Please help. My environment- vista home premium, sql xprs w/adv serv, sql xprs toolkit, IIS7, three windows auto-updates, visual studio SP1, sql SP2 and sql w/adv serv.SP2.

I now notice that my install shows reporting services available. When I deploy the report I get an behavior that was fixed ....The Reporting Services Login dialog box appears repeatedly when you deploy a report on a remote computer by using Report Designer.
I've installed and uninstalled so many times and *.exe that my install is most likely corrupt. I've browsed my registry settings and I see an entry for Report Service. This is making me crazy....Please advise how to proceed to get a clean install.

It appears that Reporting Services can not be installed on Vista Home Premium. Reporting Services needs Windows Authentication to be installed on IIS7, and the version of IIS7 on Vista Home Premium does not include Windows Authentication.
I hope that I'm wrong and that someone can say how it can be done, but from what I've read it doesn't look too good.
Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, included IIS7 in Home Premium so that the home developer/hobbyist would be able to continue with their developement of Windows and Web apps. It seems that the home developer/hobbyist does not need the ability to generate reports.
I am really hoping that this issue will be resolved in some future update to either SQL Express or Vista.

The windows authentication method under security is not an option with IIS running on windows Vista. I hope that you are aware of this issue. it is really a drag not being able to work with sql express on vista home premium. are you working on a patch so home users can actually run sql server express installation?|||
Unfortuntely, see the following post to this group - it appears that under Ultimate Vista you DO get the options for FTP and Windows Authentication (a full-blown IIS) and the poster was able to install SQL Express SP2 with Reporting Svcs.

If Microsoft made this information known, I apparently missed it as did many others. I do not remember seeing Vista Ultimate listed as a requirement in the SQL Express SP2 information - or even the BID stuff. Now it becomes a choice whether to pay the $180 additional dollars and write-off the hours spent figuring out this problem, or just scrap this and go back to LAMP development.
I'm an MCSD and have developed with MS technologies for a very long time. I'll readily admit that I can develop quality solutions much faster using Microsoft tools - but the additional costs combined with problems like this quickly negate any advantage in development time. The extra time it takes me to figure out open source software doesn't seem that bad after I spend a couple of hours to learn that MS didn't include the same IIS capabilities in Vista as XP and now I need to spend $180 more - Glassfish is looking pretty good right about now.
