Reporting services Setup

HI, this will prob be a stupid question but i have setup reporting services and am trying to use it, however, when creating a new project i only have Visual Studio Solution under other project Solutions and not any of the other types i.e. Visual Basic Solution etc. How do i get the other types? Do i need to install anything further?

If you installed client/development tools when you installed Reporting Services, you shouuld see "Business Intelligence Projects" when you select New, Project from the file menu.

If not, then the development tools were not installed correctly, re-run setup.

You will not see Visual Basic/C#, etc projects unless you install the full version of Visual Studio. The version of Visual Studio that comes with SQL Server does not include those.

To add to what Bob said: you can install Visual Studio Express in the C# or VB versions if you want those and don't have access to full-blown Visual Studio...

I'm trying to find out if it's possible to install VS 2005 and only have the Business Intelligence Project type available? In other words, no Websites, VB.Net, etc...?

If you don't install VS 2005 at all, and only install BI Development Studio during the SQL Server 2005 install, you will get the VS shell with BI project types only.

Every Time I Try To Start Any Type Of Report Server Project Out Of Visual
Studio 2005 I Get The Following Error:
Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer,
Version=9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=87987fvf5665vv91' or one
of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
I'm Running SQL Dev Server 2005
Any idea what I screwed up'

If the project was built with an older version (Beta) of the .NET Runtime
then you need to have the version installed in order for your app to run.
The alternative is to rebuild the component using the newer .NET Runtime
and this would be the recommended thing to do. After that you should no
longer be getting this error.
If the issue persists, you may want to consider reinstall .Net 2.0 and
repair VS 2005 to test the situation.

Reporting Services in sql express

When this will be available, I just started a project and I have to make some projects, the database will be sql express because the user cant buy the other editions.I dont know if MS plans to put that in express seeing how RS is a hugeaddition to the SQL Server family and belongs in the strongerversions. Could be wrong...

couple of months at several client sites in Austrlaia and have been looking
at the SQL Server 2005 Express Beta 2, as well as visiting some discussion
groups.
I have also noticed that the Beta doesn't have any Reporting Services stuff
included for 2005. Is there a release which has this or are they still
developing it?
Unfortunately I am not an MSDN Universal Subscriber so is this is where it's
located it there any way of obtaining a Beta copy to play with'There has not been a release in a public beta. It was not in beta 1 of
Widbey. So, you have not missed anything yet.

>|||The last official word I've read on when Beta 3 of SQL 2005 would be
released is sometime in the second half of this year. I'm also interested in
any more specificity MS might be willing to offer...

Reporting Services Features

My project manager is all gun-ho on using reporting services to handle the
reporting in our new project. I have been asked to research these services
and see how they will fit in. We have always used Crystal Reports, so I am
looking to see that Reporting Services can handle our needs the way Crystal
did. Any comments on the following questions would be greatly appreciated.
1. If I built, dynamically, in my code a dataset, can I use it as the data
source for a report. Most of our reports can not be straight queries from
the database, due to complexity of the data structure.
2. Is there any way for me to pass a string to the report from the code?
Thanks!You have a few ways to develop. Note that RS is not Crystal Reports and to
take advantage of its features you need to be sure to understand the
capabilities. That being said there is what can be done today and what will
be possible with V2.
Today you can not out of the box pass a dataset to RS. You would have to
write a data processing extension. Doable but non-trivial. My suggestion
with the current version is to put your logic in stored procedure. V2 (Yukon
and Widbey) will ship with two controls. A webform control and a winform
control. You should be able to pass it the dataset as you would like to do.
If integrating from your own web page (versus using the portal that ships
with RS) you can either use URL integration or you can integrate using web
services. Either way it is trivial to pass a string to the report.

Reporting Services Data Extension - Missing Microsoft.ReportingServices

Hi All,

I am trying to run an existing ReportingServices.DataExtension project. However, the required namespace "microsoft.reportingservices" doesn't seem to be available.
I thought that the required VS 2005 components and libraries would be installed as part of SQL Server 2005, but they don't seem to be there...

Any ideas on what I am missing?

Running VS 2005 on Windows XP SP2

We also have SqlServer 2005 Developer edition.

It sounds like you didn't add a reference to Microsoft.ReportingServices.Interfaces.dll to your custom data extension project - that's why the namespace can't be found.
