Reporting Services permissions installation help
machine, along with SQL Server Database Engine 2005 Developer Edition.
I am not able to perform some functions, apparently due to permissions
but I do not know what to do.
When I open the Report Manager via Internet Explorer 7, I see the top
portion; "SQL Server Reporting Services" "Home" the folder icon to the
left of those; and the links for "Home, My Subscription, and Help".
But I do not see a link for "Site Settings".
And I do not see the Report Manager Toolbar, no Contents tab or
Properties tab, and no New Folder, no New Data Source etc.
I read somewhere that this might be due to the fact that IIS is
enabled with Anonymous Access turned on. But how do I check that?
And how do I turn it off?
Also, when publishing from Visual Studio, I get:
"The permissions granted to user <machine\userX> are insufficient for
performing this operation."
Also, when I open the Management Studio and connect to the Report
Server instance, I connect and see 3 folders (Home, Security and
Shared Shedules). But Properties is grayed for the instance, and if I
try to open any Roles or System Roles, I get 'permissions are
insufficient'.
I am connecting to the instance using Windows Authentication for
UserX, and UserX is a member of the Administrators group.
When I initially installed, I installed SQL Server DB and Reporting
Services at the same time and selected Mixed Mode and specified a 'sa'
password. The Built-In-Administrators do belong to the System
Administrator's role.
Any suggestions for where to look to be able to set permissions? Or
to be able to publish?
Thanks for any help. What edition of Windows Vista are you using? Only Business, Ultimate and
Enterprise.
It does sound like you have Anonymous Auth enabled on your web site since
by default only users in the Local Administrators group have full access to
report manager.
Check the following article and make sure you followed all the steps for
installing SRS on Vista.

Reporting Service installed at the same time when installing SQL2005
Developer, mixed mode with sa. Later on I added my local user name (already
in OS admin group) to the fixed SQL role as sysadmin. I following your

I am having the same problem using Vista Ultimate, SQL 2005 developer
edition and Report Server.
Did you resolve your issue?
I am following the article step by step no success. I do not see Site
Settings When I connect to the Report Server with Microsoft SQL Managment
Studio and right click on the server node the Properties are not available.
When I expand Home I am getting message

Reporting Services option is "greyed out"
This forum is intended for users who are new to SQL Server, and have basic usage questions. If you have setup or installation issues or questions, you should check out the Setup forum.
Thanks
There was also a feature in Visual Studio 2003 whereby we could view and manage the database present on the server(s) [I think it was called the SQL Enterprise Manager], and also a tool called the Query Analyzer where we could run queries on the databases. Are these also scrapped in VS 2005? What are the alternatives if that is the case?|||How do I upgrade a SQL Server 2005 trial version with an expired license? I have a real license. If I install a new version, I don't want to lose the reports I created from the old version.
Thank you.

|||When I run my setup.exe and get to the window for "components to install" the Reporting Services option is greyed out! Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that the person who gave me the software (he isn't a DBA, and don't even ask why I have to go through him!!) gave me the wrong files? or downloaded some partial CD? I'm lost!|||It means you do not have one of the pre-req's, almost certainly IIS.Reporting Services option GREYED OUT!
Hello All,
I have a workstation that had an installation of SQL 2K5 that a tech set up for me. Naturally, it was the wrong edition AND no components were actually installed, making my laptop into a paperweight. I advised that we get SQL Developer for the DBA's and I am trying to install but the option for Reporting Services is greyed out.
I have uninstalled SQL (I think it was Standard) and I even went through the "complete uninstall" detailed in one of these threads thinking that was the problem. I am still unable to install Reporting Services.
Has anyone run into this problem?
PLEASE HELP!
thanks!
I am hoping Microsoft will document this pesky problem in future version it means you are installing SQL Server into a box without IIS. So post you operating system exact version and I will give the steps you need to fix it. Hope this helps.
|||Thanks for the reply...but when I go through the prereq's, it finds IIS and gives no warnings or errors. I've seen that issue before and you get a warning from the prereq step.
I'll check again.
Thanks!

|||OK, here's the deal, at least in my case. You not only have to have IIS installed, but it must be RUNNING. Caddre led me to look at the service and when I did, I was getting a logon failure, so it never started.
It may just be me, but this seems illogical. If the service is not installed, that's one thing. If it is simply not running, you should not only be able to install Reporting Services, but a message that IIS is installed but not running would be cool.
Thanks again,
EJ
.
|||You are saying that because you don't know how hard it was to install the 2000 version of the service, when 2005 was released Microsoft choose to disable components based on dependency instead of ending installation. XP pro go to Add/Remove programs and choose Windows components and add IIS. If it is still not there then go to the location below in your C drive and use the aspnet_regiis utility.

I now notice that my install shows reporting services available. When I deploy the report I get an behavior that was fixed ....The Reporting Services Login dialog box appears repeatedly when you deploy a report on a remote computer by using Report Designer.
I've installed and uninstalled so many times and *.exe that my install is most likely corrupt. I've browsed my registry settings and I see an entry for Report Service. This is making me crazy....Please advise how to proceed to get a clean install.

I hope that I'm wrong and that someone can say how it can be done, but from what I've read it doesn't look too good.
Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, included IIS7 in Home Premium so that the home developer/hobbyist would be able to continue with their developement of Windows and Web apps. It seems that the home developer/hobbyist does not need the ability to generate reports.

If Microsoft made this information known, I apparently missed it as did many others. I do not remember seeing Vista Ultimate listed as a requirement in the SQL Express SP2 information - or even the BID stuff. Now it becomes a choice whether to pay the $180 additional dollars and write-off the hours spent figuring out this problem, or just scrap this and go back to LAMP development.
I'm an MCSD and have developed with MS technologies for a very long time. I'll readily admit that I can develop quality solutions much faster using Microsoft tools - but the additional costs combined with problems like this quickly negate any advantage in development time. The extra time it takes me to figure out open source software doesn't seem that bad after I spend a couple of hours to learn that MS didn't include the same IIS capabilities in Vista as XP and now I need to spend $180 more - Glassfish is looking pretty good right about now.

I installed Reporting Services and forgot to name the directories. So when the installation was complete I made the virtual directories myself. But now when I try to view them It says "You are not Authorized to see this page".
Whats the deal with that ?it's probably an issue with NTFS permissions but without a little more detail from you I'm not going to be able to be more specific than that
likely the ASPNET / IUSR account needs NTFS permisisons on a bunch of files. I can't tell you which ones.

and
MSSQL\Reporting Services\ReportManager

All three files have an RSTrace section along the lines of:

You need to add a line for the directory location:
<add name="Directory" value="D:\YourLogLocation" />
You need to add it to all three files and restart reporting

you specified for the log location) will be created called
LogFiles. The logs will go to that location.

Reporting Services Installation.
setup we are selecting the Remote Sql Server Instance (On the same network
and it is an enterprise edition) as the Reporting Server Database. Locla
system has IIS and ASP.NET installed, so it will be used as Report
Server/Manager. Doing so we are getting the following error during
installation:
Cannot access Sql server on instance ("Instance Name")
Login Failed for ("NT login name"). We are providing Sql login credentials
which has full permissions to create database on the remote sql instance.
What is the issue here. Any help will be of great use!!!Setup uses the user running setup to talk to the DB server during setup.
This user must have sa privileges. If you want you can use command line
arguments to have setup use SQL auth instead. These are documented in the
template.ini file.

Reporting Services installation question.
I have installed Developer edition Sql Server and Reporting Services 2005 on my Windows XP machine (peer-to-peer network not domain). If I try to access the Report Manager home page (http://localhost:8080/reports), a login dialog appears but my own login is denied access, even though I am a member of the computer administrators group.
If I change the access of the reports virtual directory to permit anonymous access then I can get to the Report manager home page, but of course there is then no site settings tab.
In the Rpting Svcs Configuration, the following are maked completed: Server status, Report Server Virtual Directory, Report Manager Virtual Directory, Windows Service Identity (set to LocalSytem), Web service identity (set to ASPNET account), Database Setup & Initiatialization.
Where did I go wrong?
Hello Bill,
Can you make sure that the Windows Authentication boxes are checked on Default Web Site/Reports/ReportServer within IIS? Also, you'll need to make sure that the DefaultAppPool (or the application pool you are using) is the same account that is listed in your Web Service Identity.
Jarret
|||Thanks for taking the time to answer. Definitely using Windows Authentication. As I am using IIS 5.1, is DefaultAppPool even relevant? I also did some more research on my problem. I can access Report manager home page (with Site settings tab visible!) if I run IE under the built-in administrator account. My account (which as I said is a member of the computer admin group) however gets a HTTP 401.3 error, meaning my account is not on the ACL for this folder (right?) I am however using simple file sharing--so do I have to turn off SFS and institute ACL everywhere?
|||I am experiencing the same issues. On server machine when i login in via Remote Desktop as my domain account, http://localhost/reports/ pulls up the report manager page and i can set security because my domain account has been added to the machines builtin\Administrators group. From the "Home" section i click "properties" then "New Role Assignment" and add my domain user account with all roles. Next on my personal desktop I try to pull up http://<servername>/Reports and the user/pass box comes up. Typing in the user/pass three times pulls up the 403.1 forbidden.
I have created my own apppool called "reportapppool" and it runs under the same account as the asp.net service account used when cofiguring reports services. What am i missing?

Reporting Services Installation Problem
Here's the situation:
* I had an older beta (beta 1) of RS installed on a machine at an earlier time.
* Someone manually deleted the RS files on the machine as opposed to a add/remove programs operation.
* I installed the RTM Reporing Services on the machine.
* I try to author a report and get the following message:
'The located assembly's manifest definition with name 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop' does not match the assembly reference.'
I have removed VS 2003 and Reporting Services, and re-installed them numerous times, but still keep getting the same error message when I try to author a report.
Can anyone help?Which OS you are using...(Please dont tell me its XP:)..u r in trouble then)
Reporting Services Installation Issues
other than our Web Server. I am trying to access the reports from the web
application on the web server using the Report Viewer, Whenever it hits the
URL on the Reporting Service to retrieve the Report, I get a
Challenge/Reponse to enter userid and Password, How can i configure to avoid
reentering the userid/password again and again.
Please respond if you know the solution ...I'd start by comparing the IIS settings on your SRS web server to those on
your other web server. The allow anonymous authentication setting is a
common culprit.

authentication setting is Off since SRS uses Integrated login(Windows
Administrator)
Still i have the same issue
Thanks

First: Security over the reports:
Make sure your user accounts have permissions on the reports that are going
to be accessed.
Second: Authentication Method:
Make sure you are using only Windows Integrated Method on your Reports
Virtual Directory.
Third: Include URL as part of your Intranet Site.
In Internet Explorer, configure your Reports URLs as part of your Intranet
Site, in order to be recognized as a part of your Intranet. This should avoid
that you enter the userid and password again.
Regards.

Reporting Services Installation Issue
I've (now!) got a problem with the Enterprise Edition Reporting Services
Installer, in that it doesn't get passed the "Installing required components
for the Setup" screen!
I was doing the installation across a Terminal Service / VPN connection to
our live servers, and although it was taking a while, it was installing
perfectly well! However, due to a network glitch (the person in question WILL
be beaten to death!), the installer suddenly couldn't get access to the files
and i had to abort the installation.
However, now when i try to repeat the install, it only gets to the screen
mentioned above, the progress bar gets to the end, then the "installing"
label changes to "Error!" (no further info given!) and the wizard doesn't
allow any further progress.
As the screen says that these required components will NOT be uninstalled
even when Reporting Services is, i wud've thought that they are still there
and active ... so technically, the installer doesn't need to do this process
(!?) ... but obviously the installer has issues with them still being there!
Anyway, if anyone has a solution as to how to get passed this then please
let me know ... our live system has to be online by the end of the week and
we DO need Reporting Services available!
Cheers
MarkI have this same problem Mark.
Tell me, in the event viewer do you see this:
Faulting application SETUP.EXE, version 2000.80.743.0, faulting module
sqlspars.dll, version 2000.80.743.0, fault address 0x00059cf8.

posted on this site back in August with the same problem. Here is what he
told me to do:
"I was able to resolve if I remember correctly by installing from another
location. This is what I did and it appeared to have something to do with
the CDROM drive. I donâ't know why.
1. I shared my cdrom drive.
2. From the box in question, log onto the share.. start/run

3. I ran the setup like that and it worked fine "
This solution worked for me. Hopefully this helps.

installation went perfectly well!? Am sure that hurt our available bandwidth

So in my case, i ran the instal from a Network Share on the LAN our live

well!? :D
Sorted the problem b4 getting back to your replies, but thx for the help

Reporting services installation error... yes another
I've seen this error a ton in the groups, but no solutions for a lot of
them. I'll try anyway.
I have recently installed MS SQL Server 2000 Developer's Edition on my
XP machine. I am trying to install Reporting Services, which is also
2000 Dev. Ed. At one screen, I get the dreaded error msg:
"This edition of the Report Server Database is not supported on the
edition of SQL Server 2000 you have chosen."
And it won't install any further. In the query analyzer, I put:
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY
('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')
go
select @.@.version
go
And get:
8.00.760 SP3 Developer Edition
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86) Dec 17 2002
14:22:05 Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation Developer
Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
Oddly enough, my computer is not running NT but XP instead. Anyway, I
am sure the RS is Dev. Ed. It even says so during installation. The
only thing I can think of is that I also have MSDE on the machine from
earlier, and Control Panel says it is not working properly in the
Add/Remove Programs bar. Any suggestions? It sounds like you have identified the problem. It seems to me that it is
detecting the MSDE. Its been a long time since I messed around with MSDE. I
would see about removing that and seeing if that clears up the problem.

the MSDE needed to be uninstalled, and MS SQL Server 2000 reinstalled
all over again. Then everything worked.

Reporting services installation error (Error 29525 in RSMSI** log file)
I have a problem during installation.
I've got the 1603 error.
Note that http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=867872 suggestions didn't
help to solve the problem.
Quatation from RSMSI** log file:
"...
Action 13:57:32: Do_sqlScript. Configuring Microsoft SQL Server
Do_sqlScript: Running SQL Script: ...\ReportServer\CatalogTempDB.sql
<Func Name='LoadRSCatalog'>

configuration. Refer to the Server error logs and setup logs for
detailed error information.
<EndFunc Name='SqlScriptHlpr' Return='1603' GetLastError='0'>
<EndFunc Name='Do_sqlScript' Return='1603' GetLastError='0'>
..."
Thanks in advance for your time and help
Nick JHi,
I experience the same problem, and the 867872 didn't work for me either. My
configuration is SQL Server 2000 (8.00.760) on win2000 SP4. I try to install
the server components and do not have VS.NET 2003 installed. The .NET
framework 1.1 is installed.
The application log only repeats the same message: (MsiInstaller) "Error
29525. SQL Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. Refer
to the Server error logs and setup logs for detailed information."
The SQL Server log doesn't show any message related to the problem, only the
last succesfull executed action: "index restored for
ReportServerTempDB.sysfilegroups."
Since the RSMSI*.log reports a parsing error to begin with, I tried to run
the script myself (the reportservertempdb is available before you hit cancel
in setup). The scripts runs fine and creates all the objects. So I replaced
the CalatogTempDB.sql script with an empty script and tried again. However
the same error appeared. So it seemes that a parsing error isn't realy the
problem?
Please, has someone a solution to this problem?
Thanx in advance,
Marien

resolve this? Reporting Services had been running fine but something got
seriously hosed up with the permissions so I uninstalled it. I got that
message on reinstall. I've tried to create a new instance of SQL Server and
install RS to that, but that didn't work, either. I'm thinking that I may
have to reinstall Server 2003, which is definitely NOT cool.|||Are you installing in a location other than the default one?

Reporting services Installation Error
I was going well but suddenly I got an error that my SQL server instance is not supported.
I am running SQL Server 2000 desktop edition, service pack 3.0.
Is that true that is is not supported or it is just a bug in installation ?
Thanks
MikhailIt is possible that this version of SQL is not supported or that you have the wrong version of reporting services..
I came across an issue because we have developer edition on our Development server and 'regular' version on production.
When we ordered the CD we got a copy for production and it will of course not install on our dev server. I had to use the 120 day version while I wait for a proper version to arrive.
